I am Thirsty and It is Finished

<img src="https://assets.podomatic.net/ts/ef/81/a4/timsmitchell/3000x3000_11136865.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />“I am Thirsty” and “It is Finished”
John 19:28-30

Throughout the Gospels Jesus is shown to be 100% human, and 100% God. Jesus got tired, hungry, thirsty, angry, and delighted.

Other Bible characters who were thirsty:
1) Hagar and Ishmael—Gen 21:17
2) The Israelites fleeing Egypt—Ex 17:3
3) The Israelites wandering—Num 20:9
4) Samson—Judges 15:18-19
5) Jesus—John 4:7-8

The only Greek word that you’ll ever need to know:
τετέλεσται—TETELESTAI
1) Perfected—He was the perfect sacrifice, because he was without sin. 2 Cor 5:21
2) Mature—The cross is the wisest thing anyone can cling to. 1 Cor 1:18
3) Complete—all Christians unify on Jesus’ sacrifice. Eph 4:13
4) Fulfilled—the law. Matt 5:17-18; Rom 3:21-22; Gal 3:24-25
5) Finished—his pain. Heb 12:2-3
6) Paid in Full—our punishment for sin. Rom 3:23-26; Heb 10:10

It is finished—but the story continues!

Dear Woman Here is Your Son and I Entrust My Spirit Into Your Hands

<img src="https://assets.podomatic.net/ts/ef/81/a4/timsmitchell/3000x3000_11136865.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />John 19:25-27 and Luke 23:44-49

Man is the sum of three parts
(1 Thess 5:23, Hebrews 4:12):
1) Body—Our physical, destructible being. It will be recreated as indestructible on the day of resurrection (1 Cor 15:42-44).
2) Soul—All people are souls. Hebrew: nephesh, Greek: psyche. “You do not have a soul, you ARE a soul.” - C.S. Lewis. The soul is the unique conscience of each person.
3) Spirit—Human beings have a spirit, and relate to God through it. Hebrew: ruach, Greek: pneuma. I believe our spirit dies when we first sin (Romans 7:9-10). We need God’s Holy Spirit to give new birth to our dead spirit (John 3:5-7).
Jesus has exhausted all three of parts of his nature.

We trust God with our eternal salvation, but do we trust Him with our daily struggles?
1 Peter 5:7—Give all your cares to God, for he cares about you.
Matthew 11:28-30—Come to Jesus and find rest for your souls.

Jesus shows us how to enter into death:
1) Jesus quotes Scripture—Psalm 31:5. Will you do the same at the time of your death?
2) Jesus did not fear death. Do you fear death?
3) Jesus calls God, His FATHER. Last week we looked at Jesus calling God, “God,” because their relationship was strained. But now, at the moment before death, Jesus trusts that God will not abandon him in the grave.

My God, My God, Why Have You Abandoned Me?

<img src="https://assets.podomatic.net/ts/ef/81/a4/timsmitchell/3000x3000_11136865.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34

What is happening in this moment?
1) The darkness was supernaturally caused by the hand of God and was prophesied in Amos 8:9-10.
2) Jesus’ words are in Aramaic—the language of the commoner in His culture.
3) Jesus is quoting Psalm 22:1—Jesus often quoted God’s Word, and every time He does, we should pay special attention.
4) Smarter men than I have declared that Jesus was not actually abandoned by God at the cross—but I’m not sold on that. I think Jesus was experiencing the greatest spiritual agony of all time—to be separated by God, if only for a moment. Jesus has been with God since the beginning of time eternal, and now he is utterly alone.
5) Jesus normally calls God his, “Father.” Jesus address God in a way he rarely has before.
6) God does not reply to Jesus’ cry. Instead, Jesus continues to suffer on the cross.
7) We want to avoid the belief of some ancient heretics who taught that Jesus ceased to be God in this moment.
8) Jesus is taking on the wrath of God for the sin of all mankind for all time. We call this substitution. 2 Corinthians 5:21
9) Not only is God giving Jesus all of the punishment we deserve, as if Jesus earned it, He gives us all of the rewards that Jesus deserved, and we can never earn it. We call this grace. Romans 8:32.
10) God did not abandon Jesus in the grave! Even Psalm 22 ends with a victorious King being worshiped by the whole earth. See also Acts 2:27 and 31.

      <itunes:summary>Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34

See also Acts 2:27 and 31.</itunes:summary>
